The project was launched on the 30th of August 1995, with schools starting to take measurements that week. Schools email their results weekly to the Global Lab data base in the USA and monthly to the ozone centre at Sunshine Secondary College.
To measure tropospheric ozone, ground level pollution, students are using 2 methods :- Drager gas sampling tubes and Ecobadges, in one of 3 locations -- INSIDE, OUTSIDE AND FIELD (vegetated area) Most schools report levels close to zero in winter but higher results in spring and summer.

To measure stratospheric ozone students use a TCO, (Total Column Ozonometer), which is pointed to the sun and measures the total ozone in the atmosphere above the observer. It is always best to take readings close to noon.
